To Empathize

Empathy. It’s the first basic principle of counseling. And the most difficult. A counselor who is blind to his issues and who hasn’t grasped his problems and at least tried to work them out cannot put himself in other’s shoes. Even if he listens, he cannot hear. Chances are, his own opinions and reactions will surface, especially when he hears situations similar to his own. And instead of respecting the client’s right to feel his own emotions and discover for himself the way to deal with his problem, he becomes deaf and starts directing the client to feel, act and deal the way he would.
