Atrophy, n. degeneration; deterioration.

Michael got sick and stayed 30 days in the hospital. He was so weak that he could hardly move. Eating was such an effort that I had to feed him. He would try sitting up on the bed, but he could only hold himself up for a while. Because he couldn’t move much, nor walk a distance, we noticed that his legs started to shrink. I thought it was because of weight loss but was worried all the same. Our relatives in the medical field said he had to start walking, otherwise they would atrophy.
